Hiring: Staff Software Engineer — Search Platform, Ingestion & Indexing Company: Thomson Reuters Location: Ann Arbor, MI Job Posted Time: 2026-09-11 17:58:14 Employment Type: Full-time (proactive recruitment for current or future openings) Target Skills & Keywords: Search Platform, Ingestion & Indexing, Kafka, Stream Processing, Vespa, OpenSearch, Protobuf, Schema Registry, Document Pipeline, Embeddings, Re-ranking Models, Model Operationalization, CI/CD, Canary Rollouts, Distributed Systems, AI-Assisted Development Experience: - Staff-level software engineering experience architecting and owning large-scale distributed data pipelines - Hands-on experience with Kafka-based streaming architectures and at-least-once delivery guarantees - Experience with search engines and index management (Vespa and/or OpenSearch) - Experience operationalizing ML models (embedding, re-ranking, enrichment) in production - Track record of full-stack ownership: defining, building, testing, deploying, scaling, and operating shipped systems Required Skills: - End-to-end document ingestion pipeline design: parsing, chunking, enrichment (entity extraction, embedding generation, metadata enrichment), and indexing - Fault tolerance, version ordering, and idempotent processing at scale - Pluggable, configurable pipeline components (parsers, chunkers, enrichers, indexers) exposed via self-service APIs - Protobuf-based document schema ownership and schema registry governance with backward-compatible evolution - Dual-flow ingestion: high-throughput batch reindexing plus low-latency incremental updates - Vespa application architecture, document processors, custom Kafka feeders, and application package design - Model lifecycle management: inference serving behind stable APIs, latency SLOs, batching, quantization, hardware/runtime configuration - Model promotion pipelines: CI/CD, versioning, canary rollouts, and rollback mechanisms - AI-assisted development and continuous delivery to production Qualifications: - Proven ability to set architectural boundaries and lead complex migrations with little or no precedent - Strong cross-team collaboration skills, enabling client teams to assemble custom topologies - Commitment to reliable, observable, and performant execution - Experience with zero-downtime operations and agentic retrieval patterns is a plus Compensation: Not specified in the job posting.
