Hiring: Senior Actuary Company: Markel Location: Richmond, VA Job Posted Time: 2026-09-10 11:27:01 Employment Type: Full-time About the job Experience: •8-10 years of actuarial experience, with a strong emphasis on Commercial Lines pricing required •10 years of actuarial experience, with a strong emphasis on Commercial Lines pricing required Required Skills: •Lead pricing analyses for assigned Commercial Professional Lines, including the development of rate indications, pricing tools, and portfolio insights to support profitable growth and pricing strategies. •Evaluate and support new business opportunities, including research, modeling, and pricing framework development for emerging or expanding lines of business. •Partner closely with Underwriting, Claims, and other cross-functional stakeholders to ensure pricing strategies appropriately reflect risk characteristics and market dynamics. •Clearly communicate actuarial findings and recommendations to both actuarial and non-actuarial audiences, including senior leadership, and adapt analyses as needed based on stakeholder feedback. •Present results and recommendations in meetings, ensuring alignment and clarity across technical and non-technical audiences. •Provide guidance to non-actuarial partners on actuarial principles, methodologies, and key assumptions driving pricing decisions. •Contribute to and lead cross-functional initiatives, representing the Actuarial function in broader business projects. •Actively facilitate and support development of junior staff by reinforcing actuarial best practices and aligning work with corporate goals and standards. Qualifications: •A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in mathematics, statistics, or related analytical field •Minimum of 8-10 years of actuarial experience, with a strong emphasis on Commercial Lines pricing required •Demonstrated experience in Professional Lines products (e.g., E&O, D&O, EPLI) strongly preferred •Proven ability to lead and manage projects, including prioritization, resource coordination, and delivery against deadlines •Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively with Underwriting and other business partners •Demonstrated capacity to clearly articulate and defend actuarial assumptions, methodologies, and conclusions •Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to balance technical rigor and practical business judgment •Demonstrated capacity to balance creativity with sound actuarial discipline in developing pricing strategies •US Work Authorization required.
