Hiring: Automotive HVAC Systems Engineer Company: Waymo Location: Novi, MI Job Posted Time: 2026-09-02 17:59:48 Employment Type: Full-time Target Skills & Keywords: Automotive HVAC, Electric Climate Compressor, Cabin Ventilation, Vapor-Compression Cycle, Refrigerants, 4-Zone Climate Control, Design Verification Plans (DVP), Heat Pump Systems, Thermal Systems, Battery Cooling, E-Powertrain Cooling, OEM Collaboration, V&V Experience: - Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar qualification) with 8+ years of experience in Automotive Engineering at an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier - Experience designing electric climate compressor based HVAC systems, from concept phase (including requirements definition) to execution and verification - Proven track record of designing automotive cabin ventilation systems, including vent placement, vent design, and specification of airflow requirements - Experience working with standard automotive development processes including project gateways and phases - Preferred: Experience specifying, designing, and verifying 4-zone automatic climate control systems - Preferred: Experience developing automotive thermal systems including conventional powertrain cooling, e-powertrain, and battery cooling systems Required Skills: - Deep understanding of the thermodynamics of an AC's vapor-compression cycle - Expert-level knowhow of typical automotive refrigerants and their regulatory requirements (world-wide) - Ability to create and negotiate targets and requirements with OEMs and/or Tier 1 suppliers - Ability to define HVAC performance metrics (cabin comfort metrics) based on customer satisfaction targets and benchmarking studies - Capability to establish class-leading targets for HVAC energy efficiency standards through research, benchmarking, and physical properties - Strong design experience to develop novel but practical, low-risk solutions for unique vehicle configurations - Ability to drive OEM partners to deliver against comfort, performance, and efficiency targets - Ability to define sign-off requirements and supervise verification of system performance through OEM partners and internal V&V teams - Preferred: Experience creating effective Design Verification Plans (DVPs) based on system targets and requirements - Preferred: Evidence of innovation in automotive HVAC, e.g., alternative refrigerants like R-290, R-744, new component development, or innovative heat pump systems Qualifications: - Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar qualification - 8+ years of automotive engineering experience with an OEM or Tier 1 supplier - Collaborative mindset to work with internal partners and external OEM partners - Curiosity and talent to grow within a diverse, innovative, and collaborative hardware engineering group - Willingness to travel to Waymo partners to support requirement implementation or to Waymo test sites to support requirement verification Compensation: Not specified in the provided job text.
