Hiring: Assistant Street Superintendent Company: City of Burlington, NC Location: Burlington, NC Job Posted Time: 2026-09-15 13:20:25 Employment Type: Full-time / On-site Target Skills & Keywords : Project Management About the job Required Skills: •This is an internal posting for existing City of Burlington employees in the Streets Division**** •On-Site Supervision and Direction: Supervises work crews maintaining streets and drains, including asphalt patching, crack sealing, stormwater repairs, culvert maintenance, sidewalk, curb, and gutter maintenance, and snow/ice removal. •Material Management: Creates and submits purchase orders for materials, ensuring materials are used according to project plans. •Personnel and Equipment Scheduling: Coordinates and assigns personnel and equipment based on priorities established by the Street Superintendent. •Site Inspections and Adjustments: Conducts inspections of work in progress, adjusting assignments as needed to meet timelines, budgets, and project specifications. •Safety Oversight: Performs safety inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations and proper placement of signage and traffic control devices. •Operational and Personnel Issue Resolution: Resolves operational challenges or personnel issues as they arise. •Work Schedule and Equipment Utilization: Modifies work schedules as necessary and ensures equipment is utilized efficiently, making adjustments if needed. Qualifications: •Knowledge of Street Maintenance and Drainage: In-depth understanding of the methods, materials, and practices involved in specialized street maintenance and drainage work, including the use of asphalt, concrete, stone, gravel, and other materials. •Supervisory and Leadership Skills: Strong knowledge of effective supervisory practices, team building, and leadership techniques to foster trust and rapport with staff. •Project Management Expertise: Proficient in applying project management principles and practices to ensure the successful completion of tasks and projects. •Street Maintenance Equipment Proficiency: Extensive knowledge of street maintenance and repair equipment, including those used for earth-moving and asphalt applications. •Construction Equipment Operation: Skilled in the operation of a variety of construction equipment, including utility vehicles, loaders, motor graders, rollers, and backhoes. •Employee Training and Safety Instruction: Ability to train new employees in proper work procedures and provide instruction on safety methods and practices. •Reading and Interpreting Work Plans: Capable of reading and interpreting profile sheets and grade stakes to ensure accurate project execution. •Public Interaction and Conflict Resolution: Skilled in interacting with the public, applying tact and discretion, and diffusing potential conflicts when working near private properties or in public rights-of-way. •Equipment Operation and Employee Training: Ability to operate and train others in the use of utility vehicles and other street maintenance equipment. •Interpersonal and Public Relations Skills: Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the general public.
